Are you feeling sad much of the time?  Are you struggling to get started with activities or feeling like the smallest of tasks take too much energy?  Depression will often make us feel like there is great discomfort in our chest or stomach.  We can doubt ourselves and feel as if we are not worth as much as other people.  We can feel drained and as if there is something wrong with us that affects most aspects of our lives and as if the sadness will never end.

Am I Just Sad or Am I Clinically Depressed?

While it is important to be diagnosed by a trained mental health practitioner to determine if you genuinely qualify as having a diagnosable condition involving depression, common symptoms of depression can include

1. Feelings of sadness most of the day nearly every day

2. Having a lessened interest in participating in activities you used to enjoy

3. Difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep

4. Decreased appetite or overeating to self-medicate sad feelings

5. Feelings of restlessness or being slowed down

6. Loss of energy

7. Feelings of worthlessness

8. Feelings of low self-esteem

9. Feelings of inappropriate guilt

10. Difficulty concentrating

11. Difficulty making decisions

12. Thoughts of death or wishing one was dead

13. Thoughts of suicide.

Please realize that a person does not have to have all of these symptoms at the same time in order to be diagnosed with a depressive disorder.  In some cases, having simply a few of these symptoms for a period of time that do not go away, can be an indication that a person needs help from a trained mental health professional in order to resolve their issues.

How to Know When You Need Help from a Psychologist:

When depressive symptoms are starting to impact your daily life and are affecting your relationships, work performance, parenting, and social connections or general sense of well-being and you feel helpless to change your life, it is time to consider getting some help.

Perhaps you have hoped things would get better over time.  Maybe you have tried talking to friends and or family members or simply bottled up how you were feeling while believing no one would understand. Maybe you believed it wasn't safe to talk to others about how you have felt.  If this sounds like you, you have found a doctor who cares and would like to help.  Depression is treatable.  Dr. Jane Braun is here to help you.

Techniques typically used for the treatment of depression will depend upon whether or not the individual's depression has trauma as a root cause.  If past traumatic experiences are a root issue that have caused depressive symptoms to develop, EMDR will be recommended.  In addition to EMDR, cognitive behavioral methods of psychotherapy, insight oriented psychotherapy, and experiential therapies will likely be a part of the treatment plan.  Dr Braun will present different options for treatment and will collaborate with you to find a treatment style with which you feel the most comfortable.

Dr. Braun is ready to help you explore your sad feelings and develop a better understanding of the root causes of your despair.   Practical strategies will be provided to help you experience joy, peace, energy, and motivation to create the life you have always wanted.  Often when we struggle with depression, the feelings are so strong, it can be hard to imagine that it is possible to feel different.  However, change is always possible!  You deserve to have a life in which you can feel complete, connected, and enthusiastic.  Please contact Dr. Braun and let her help you to embrace the life you have always wanted.  You deserve to feel better.

Please decide to stop suffering and take the first step toward reclaiming your life by calling Dr. Braun for a free 15 minute consultation: (708) DR-BRAUN or (708) 372-7286.
