Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, Dr. Braun will help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

While a friend can hold a conversation with you, there is typically no guarantee that they will not judge you or gossip and tell others about your situation.  Even if you have a trustworthy friend, this friend does not have the years of education, professional training, and years of experience working with clients with problems similar to your problem and successfully helping these people resolve their issues.  Your friend, most likely, also does not have training in Neuropsychology and an ability to integrate their knowledge of medical illnesses with mental health issues that may be a root cause of why you actually are suffering.  Dr. Braun can help you approach your situation in a new way, teach you new skills, help you to gain different perspectives, and listen to you without judgment or expectations.  Friends and family members can quickly become emotionally overwhelmed when listening or tire of helping when problems are not easily resolved.  Dr. Braun is a doctor who will not become overwhelmed with your problems.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication can be effective but it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals.  If Dr. Braun believes that medication would be helpful to you, this will be recommended.  However, she will first attempt to resolve your issues without medication.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, counseling services will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs.  The first session will be an interview to learn more about your problem and current circumstances.  In addition, all aspects of your history will be reviewed to determine if there are any medical, medication, developmental, intellectual, learning disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, substance abuse, trauma, other mental health disorders, or life stress factors contributing to your problem and making it difficult for you to resolve your issues.  Counseling will address all of the issues that need to be addressed in order to help you to resolve your problems.

How long will it take?

Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general Frequently Asked Questions page. Everyone’s circumstance is unique and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your level of motivation, your commitment to do your part in making changes in your life after you receive suggestions and assistance in therapy to make these changes, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success.
